The battery on your car is usually located within the engine compartment. It's a sealed unit containing cells of lead plate and acid electrolyte which convert chemical reaction into electrical charge.
As a sourced of stored electrical energy, the car battery provides power to all of the vehicles electrical systems including the car lighting system, the engine starter motor and the vehicle ignition system. Once the engine is started, the battery is charged via the car alternator, keeping the level of power supplied at just over 12 volts.

The main reason to change a car battery is when the plates inside have worn out. This happens after many years of constantly discharging and re-charging, and the chemical reaction slowly erodes the plates inside. When this happens, the battery may still be supplying power, but not quite enough to keep the vehicle running smoothly. When this happens, it's time to have the battery replaced.
Other issues can arise with the battery. In some circumstances, the terminal connections may become loose, or corrosion may occur leading to a bad connection. This can be resolved by removing the terminal connectors and cleaning the battery terminals, removing the surface layer with sandpaper to provide a good clean surface for the connection to the positive and negative power connections. Similarly, the vehicle earth connection needs to be maintained.
The alternator provides the battery with charge within the vehicle. Faults with the alternator can mean that the battery receives either no charge, too little charging or it can sometimes over charge the battery.
If no charge is coming from the alternator, then the vehicle may start and run for a short journey, but eventually the battery won't be able to maintain the electrical demand from the car and the engine will stop running. There are warning signs that this is happening. These will include things like wiper motors operating much slower than usual, lights become dimmer and the overall performance of the car will reduce gradually.
The same thing applies if the alternator is under charging, but the symptoms will only appear over a longer period of time.
If the alternator over charges the battery, then this will lead to an overload on the system, and the battery can become unstable. This can lead to overheating in the battery and the cables, causing burn out and in very rare circumstances, battery failure by explosion.
Starting a car when it's very cold, can be a problem. Just like you, getting started in the morning when it's below freezing is not an easy task, and it's the same for the battery and the car engine.
